Skin Care Strategies: Eczema Therapies

Eczema or dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease. It presents with itchy red rash, swelling, blisters and dry or cracked skin. The dermatologist typically treats eczema with corticosteroid ointments and/or antihistamines. As a vital part of skin care strategies, natural eczema therapies prove invaluable. The article details both mainstream and natural therapies.

The following information will address a Konji reader's question: "Is eczema a dreaded skin disease? What is the remedy?"

Even people who practice due diligence in skin care can still contract inflammatory diseases of the skin, such as eczema, a.k.a. dermatitis. Our outer skin is a vital indicator of our inner health. It is also the first thing to impress people when they see us the first time. Proper skin care is important in maintaining overall health, as well as, for putting our best self forward.

When our skin becomes inflamed and itchy, it requires more than soap, water and moisturizing.

Eczema – What it is

Continuous itching and uncontrollable scratching characterize eczema a.k.a. dermatitis. Inflammation of upper layers of skin can cause blisters, redness, swelling, rashes, dry and often cracked skin that is susceptible to further infection. Further, scaling, scabbing and/or oozing may manifest.

Experts agree that if one or both your parents suffered asthma or hay fever, you are at heightened risk to develop eczema.

Skin Care Strategies of the Dermatologist

Normally attributed a children's disease, when adults contract eczema, the dermatologist should rule out adverse drug reactions before treating.

Corticosteroid Ointments serve as mainstream medicines first line of treatment for eczema. These topical ointments can create thinning of the skin. The medical practitioner may prescribe topical calcineurin inhibitors to combat this side effect.

Unfortunately, calcineurin inhibitors exhibit a black box warning from the FDA: may increase the risk of lymphoma. As you are becoming a conscious partner in your health care, consult with your dermatologist about other possible options.

Antihistamines taken at bedtime may relieve your itching and make you drowsy to aid in restful sleep.

Skin-Care Products

Only use facial products that are fragrance and preservative free, so that your skin will not become further inflamed.

Lotions that include alcohol are detrimental to your skin. Check with your dermatologist for soaps that won't dry out or irritate your skin.

Take a lukewarm shower, only one time daily. Be mindful, the hotter the water, the more histamines are released, causing your skin to get itchier. Hot, hot water opens your skin pores and permits moisture to escape.

Slather on liberal amounts of a lotion or crème containing humectants following your shower or bath. Humectants promote moisture retention. Glycerol/glycerin is one of the common humectants contained in skin care products.

Natural Skin Care

From the holistic practitioner point of view, a skin disease such as eczema results from accumulated waste, on a cellular level, which causes inflammation. Detoxification attacks the root cause, rather than treats the symptom(s).

Turmeric is the top herbal anti-inflammatory to de-flame skin. In Asia, turmeric is considered a major skin-treatment herb. It reduces heat and cleanses the liver.

Coleus is an Ayurvedic herb that has historically been effective in treating eczema. 

Green Vegetables are considered cooling and anti-inflammatory treatments for the skin. They also detoxify. Wheat grass is probably the best option, but celery, broccoli, cucumber and other dark, leafy greens also work wonders.

Consider juicing to obtain adequate healing amounts of green vegetables. Drinking approximately one quart of wheat grass juice each day will de-flame your skin quickly.

If you or your natural health practitioner feels that fasting will detoxify your body and clear-up eczema, a juice fast is the most auspicious. I'm personally not an advocate of total fasting. A modified fast, which allows juice or other thin liquids for a short duration makes more sense.
