Psoriasis Symptoms and Treatments

Psoriasis has several forms, the most common being bright red raised areas shedding dead skin flakes. It can only occur in people predisposed to the condition. Believed to be caused by a disorder of skin biochemistry, dead (outer) epidermal skin cells are replaced more quickly than necessary, with consequent thickening of the underlying skin. Stress is a known trigger.

Cures

Naturopathy

A whole food diet and exercise are considered vital to increase the flow of oxygen to the skin, and combat the effects of both depression and anxiety. Hydrotherapy would also be employed for bathing affected areas, in addition to the use of poultices and compresses. Acupuncture is often used to bring relief to the sufferer.

Vitamins and Minerals

The naturopathic view is that psoriasis is linked closely to an error of fat metabolism. Various studies have shown that many psoriasis sufferers tend to have raised levels of cholesterol, and many have recovered from their skin condition through nutritional therapy that has included the natural emulsifier lecithin. Found in unrefined plant oils, wheat, eggs liver and nuts, lecithin also has the advantage of lowering the blood cholesterol level, in some cases where orthodox drugs have failed to do so. Raw juices can also help this condition. A recommended raw juice for psoriasis consists of 1 pint (570 ml) carrot and apple in equal proportions, once or twice daily. Fish oils also help combat psoriasis - good sources include salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel, kippers and whitebait.

Specific dietary supplements include garlic, zinc, fish liver oil, beta-carotene, vitamin B-complex (especially calcium pantothenate) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamins C and E, and lecithin (you need to take maximum dose recommended on the label of the packet in order to get the best results).

Herbal Medicine

Make an infusion with 2 pinches of each of the following added to a cup of water - sage, lavender, thyme, chamomile and lime flowers - and drink 3 cups daily. Alternatively (or in addition), bathe affected areas in warm water and pat dry. Apply calendula or comfrey ointment.

Aromatherapy

Make up oil using 2 teaspoons (10 ml) sweet almond oil plus 10 drops of essence of cajuput. Apply twice daily.

Homeopathy

Take remedies 4 times a day for up to 2 weeks: Arsenicum 6c when the affected area is burning hot, and the person is physically exhausted although mentally restless, and feels chilly; Sulphur 30c to treat dry, red, scaly, itchy patches that are worse after baths, especially if the person often feels too hot; Graphites 6c when areas behind the ears are affected, and there is honey-colored pus; Petroleum 6c when psoriasis is aggravated by the cold and is much worse in winter; and Kali ars. 6c when affected areas are excessively scaly, and aggravated by warmth.

Other Therapies

Like eczema, psoriasis is undoubtedly influenced by tension and stress, and may, therefore, be greatly helped by relaxation and meditation techniques, and exercises such as dance therapy, t'ai chi and yoga, which harmonize body, mind and spirit.

Medical Treatment

Treatment includes skin preparations to help remove the encrusted scales and plaques, ultraviolet (UV) light therapy and tar baths. Steroid skin preparations and tablets are sometimes prescribed for very severe psoriasis.

Prevention

  • This condition is hereditary and can only be controlled, not cured.
  • Avoid known triggers such as poor diet and excessive stress.
  • Take supplements as advised by doctor.

Caution

  • Psoriasis sufferers are at risk of depression.
  • Avoid scratching - patches of psoriasis easily become infected.
